Exclusive Dining in MariazellerLand

17.04.2019

From the finest home grown beef of one of the best Jeunes Restaurateurs in Austria, tucked away in the middle of the forest, to the best trout straight from its habitat in the most charming cottage setting, to century old houses in the center of Mariazell but with all modern amenities with home brewery and memorable whiskey tasting experiences that only Scotland would top, our MariazellerLand has been blessed with some of the most exclusive dining experiences that can't be found anywhere in Austria.

So we'd like to present some of these places (in no particular order), some of which are still best kept secrets, who in our humble opinion deserve the qualification of exclusive dining. Try any of them and we promise you won't be disappointed.

Drei Hasen - this charming small hotel & restaurant is neatly tucked away below the famous Pirker ginger bread on a side street in the city center. The entire menu is a delight and quality is taken seriously here from the smallest detail of your table setting right to the deliciousness of every dish. We can highly recommend the steak (which we end up ordering every single time) and the game when it's in season. This is a family run business in it's 5th generation! However, no customer no matter how small is taken for granted here and you will feel the warmth of their welcome, like you are part of the family no matter if you have been here ten times or if this is your first time. The cherry on top is the whiskey tasting that is offered from a collection of more than 100 types of whiskey by the owners themselves who are very passionate about whiskey. We have taken some very picky whiskey aficionados here and they were very impressed. If you are a whiskey fan it is a MUST try experience while you are here. Even if whiskey is not your thing, you gotta try the Scottish Coffee, it's like Irish Coffee but better! To make your experience more enjoyable feel free to linger by renting one of their charming cozy rooms.

Lurgbauer - this is quite a unique dining experience and very original in it's idea. They are part of the Jeunes Restaurateurs movement in Austria which combines traditional rural culture with modern design and creative cuisine. It all starts with the home grown Aberdeen Angus and the Lurgbauer calf that is raised carefree on some of the richest, purest meadows you'll find in the Austrian Alps. They make an effort to cook only with seasonal regional ingredients of the best quality and we can only admire and support this philosophy. They have a nice three course menu for lunch and a six course menu for those who want to indulge in a gourmet feast, you have never had beef so tender and with this type of a refreshing interpretation before. You can make it part of your hike through the woods, as it stands in the middle of a meadow surrounded by fir trees or stay overnight and enjoy the tranquility and the fresh air. You'll leave satisfied and rejuvenated.

Stadtheuriger - this is the place to go if you are looking for that urban feel, because after all Mariazell is a historic town not just beautiful country side. As you step up the stairs to their terrace you get that warm fuzzy feeling of a neighborhood pub, not the gringy kind, but the one where every corner invites you to hang out with your friends. We love the design, the cozy sheep skins, the woodwork and the outside fires in winter. This is the place you take your vegetarian friends for a veggie burger and you have the real burger (make sure you are hungry cause it's GOOD). Their home made lemonade is really home made and makes you think of summer in the garden. They have a lot to offer from Tarte flambรฉe to Jack Daniels Spare Ribs, don't say we didn't warn you, it will be hard to decide. So you'll just have to go back like we do.

Mooshubenwirt - it's summer and you can just see yourself frolicking on the flower rich meadows in Mariazellerland. There are many hikes around this great traditional country restaurant, so we suggest that you look them up and see that you make this place part of your route, whether for lunch or at the end of your day. You can't get much fresher trout than they are serving if it were to jump out of the water and onto your plate. Frau Sigi is a well known hostess, always friendly and beaming with cheerfulness that you are sure to catch some and you'll find yourself giddy for no reason. In summer they have lovely outdoor seating and in winter you can be all cozy in a traditional warm country setting. It is all about the trout here, although they have some other solid staples of the Styrian cuisine such as a good Schnitzel. Just to keep it fresh, sometimes they do Backhendl Tage with crazy good fried chicken. They rent out charming little wood huts and you can take quality smoked trout home with you at a remarkably good price.

Brauhaus Mariazell - last but certainly not least we have something for the bier purists, the ones who subscribe to the art of beer making in it's purest form, just like the monks of old used to make. Might we suggest that they must know what they are doing since they have been brewing beer in this centuries old house since 1673. What more could we say about this cozy beer house except what they say about themselves:

Gemรผtlichkeit is our great commandment...only those who are relaxed can enjoy with all their senses! In addition to an ambiance that simply makes you feel good, it is the excellent cuisine above all that meets every taste and turns our guests into regulars!
