Run with the Krampus

As we are looking forward to the first weekend of Advent ushering in the holiday season, Halloween is not far behind us. Making sure the dark scary is close and real, are the Krampus and his Perchten, ready to punish misbehaving children who did not qualify for the gifts of Saint Nicholas (get your shoes all clean, December 6th is St. Nicholas day). It makes Santa and his coals look pretty harmless compared to a whopping from the Krampus. According to one Austrian legend, the Krampus has a 12-inch long tongue that he uses to lick naughty children, beats them and carries them off in his sack. The Krampus shows up mainly in the Alpine folklore, he is always hairy and wearing grotesque facial expressions rendered by expertly carved wooden masks and he always has chains or whips on him. He is almost always in the company of the daemonic Perchten, who are very old mythical figures that go back to pre-Christian times. The idea behind it is to scare the bad spirits of winter away so that they...

Advent in the Holy Land

Advent is a special time that we look forward to every year, almost more than the actual Christmas. It is a time of reflection, of standing still, even if for a moment, to take in the beauty of the season. The days are shorter and the nights filled with candle light, stories and scents reminding us of childhood wonders. We have less activity during the day and live more in our dreams at night. It is a good time to leave the noise of the city and look for the quiet of winter. There are many beautiful villages where you can accomplish that in Austria, from Salzburg to Tirol to Styria. The Mariazeller Advent (Picture Β© is probably one of the most famous ones. They come from near and far to the little ginger bread town to take in the spirit of the season. Austria is a country rich in traditions, every village has its own customs, and they probably never come alive as vibrant as they do at Christmas time. Every family has their own, after all, Christmas season in Austria is...

November Mists

There is something about a November hike that is both peaceful and mysterious. Nature has already settled into the long winter nap, there are no birds chirping in the woods. On a crisp clear day mists rise like thick cotton clouds over the valleys, revealing mountain peaks or hiding church steeples, much like Mitterbach in the Mariazell region, the village at the foot of the Gemeindealpe. The Oetscher, even though further away, looks so close, like a sentinel standing guard over this blessed country. While this hike can be done virtually in any season, preferably on a clear sunny day so you can enjoy the views, we first fell in love with it on a mid November day. There was no one on the road and the woods opened up to us with soft leaves carpeted floors, it was much like entering an old forgotten castle. Still, we never felt alone walking through silent trees and over harvested meadows, Fall was around us like a soft blanket. As the summer tourists have left and ski season has yet to begin...
